A Digital Archive of Community Photos
The Community Photo Collection began in 1995 and now consists of over 4,500 digital images belonging to Eastern Shore families who have agreed to allow the Archives to scan their personal, historical photographs.
The Archives understands that family photos are best kept in the family. Instead, consider allowing us to make archival quality, high resolution scans of your historical family photographs. We preserve a digital copy, while you keep the original.
The digital images are described and catalogued in a database that is available for in-house research with the assistance of our volunteers and summer staff.
Please Contact Us is you would like us to search this important collection.
Consider Contributing to the Collection
Archives volunteers will come to your home (or you may bring your photos to the Archives) and scan the original images, producing a high resolution archival digital copy. Original images are returned to the family, and the Archives keeps the digital scans, along with documenting the details of the photograph. The Archives will also supply family members with digital copies of the photographs. Contact us if you are interested in this service. We are interested in photos of the Eastern Shore: families, industries, landscapes and buildings that predate 1950.
Donated Photographs
Photographs donated to the collection require a signed usage agreement from the donor of the photograph. While copyright of the photograph remains with the donor, the agreement allows the Archives to provide researchers with a one-time personal-use print for research purposes. In addition, the agreement allows the Archives to use the image for archival purposes and promotion, such as the popular Eastern Shore Heritage Calendar.
Eastern Shore Heritage – Calendar Series
The Archives began producing a Heritage Calendar in 2011. The calendar uses photographs from the Community Photo Collection, and represents communities from across the Eastern Shore region. The calendar is an important annual fundraiser for the Lake Charlotte Area Heritage Society. Calendar sales in the Sheet Harbour area also assist the work of the Sheet Harbour Historical Society. We are always looking for “calendar photos”, Contact Us if you have a special photograph to share.
